Taking Responsibility for Problem-Solving Opportunities: Towards a Positive Engineering Ethics

In den USA ist Ingenieurethik fester Bestandteil der Ingenieurausbildung. Aber was soll die Ethik eigentlich leisten? Auf den ersten Blick geht es darum, Grenzen aufzuweisen. Aber haben Ingenieure eine weitergehende Verantwortung, sich für bestimmte Lösungen gesellschaftlicher Probleme einzusetzen? Dafür argumentierte der amerikanische Philosoph Don Howard von der University of Notre Dame in seinem englischsprachigen Vortrag „Taking Responsibility for Problem-Solving Opportunities: Towards a Positive Engineering Ethics“.

Organisiert wurde diese Veranstaltung von IANUS, einer Einrichtung zur wissenschaftlichen Friedensforschung an der TU Darmstadt, in Kooperation mit dem Forum interdisziplinäre Forschung. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag wurden verschiedene Aspekte in einer Podiumsdiskussion mit Manfred Hampe (TU Darmstadt, Fachbereich Maschinenbau) und Wolfgang Liebert (Universität für Bodenkultur Wien) vertieft.

First, Don Howard reflects on the history of technology ethics as a field, for the purpose of understanding why it developed with an almost exclusive emphasis on technology critique and he recommends -while the technology ethicist as moral watchdog is still a hugely important role – that the field needs also to begin to accept a responsibility for locating those still under-appreciated opportunities where technology can contribute to the solution of pressing social and environmental problems and the tech ethicists can help technical communities, policy makers, and the public to negotiate the transitions required to effect such change.
