FiF Lecture 2019 with Hans Joas

The power of the sacred

Hans Joas has published a number of important publications that have generated great interest beyond academic sociology.

His latest book deals with the “power of the sacred” (Suhrkamp: Berlin 2017) and the ambivalence of the phenomenon of religion in a discussion of Max Weber's thesis of a continuing “disenchantment” as a symbol of modernity. This was also the topic of his FiF Lecture.

Currently Hans Joas holds the Ernst Troeltsch Honorary Professorship at the Humboldt University in Berlin. For his scientific work he has received numerous awards, including the Niklas Luhmann Prize 2010, the Max Planck Research Award 2015 and the Prix Paul Ricoeur 2017.
