Joas’s book, published in 2017, addresses the “power of the sacred” and the ambivalence of the phenomenon of religion, engaging with Max Weber’s thesis of progressive “disenchantment” as a hallmark of modernity. The FiF Lecture he delivered was also dedicated to this topic.

Hans Joas holds the Ernst Troeltsch Honorary Professorship at Humboldt University of Berlin. He has received numerous awards for his scholarly work, including the Niklas Luhmann Prize (2010), the Max Planck Research Award (2015), and the Prix Paul Ricoeur (2017).
