Public lecture “Responsive Creativity” on May 23, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. in the Wilhelm-Köhler-Saal (Old Main Building, S1|03 283)

For the 2018 FiF Lecture, the FiF invited Bernhard Waldenfels, one of the most significant contemporary philosophers. The public lecture on the topic of “Responsive Creativity” took place on May 23, 2018, in the Wilhelm-Köhler-Saal. Until his retirement in 1999, Bernhard Waldenfels held the Chair of Philosophy at Ruhr University Bochum.

He has distinguished himself through a series of works on a phenomenology of the stranger, based on the premise that orders respond to the claims of the other and the stranger without being able to incorporate them into the order itself. Responses to such claims thus always arrive too late. The lecture demonstrated how the fundamental features of a responsive phenomenology can also be applied to an understanding of creativity—given that creativity necessarily thrives on the incalculable, the indeterminate, and a lack of precision.
