Project description:

Phase transition of Nickel Sulfide (NiS) inclusions can cause an increase in volume that may lead to spontaneous fracture of safety glass. The main goal of this collaborative project was to get a better understanding of these processes that depend on temperature, chemical composition and other possible factors like pressure and the inclusion’s history. For this, experiments on inclusions, both collected by the Institute of Structural Mechanics and Design and synthesized by the Eduard-Zintl-Institute of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, were conducted. These included photoelastic, microscopic, X-ray diffraction, X-ray-spectroscopic, electron backscatter diffractometric and calorimetric analyses. Besides statistical evaluations, new insights on composition, phase transitions as well as on differences between nickel sulphide inclusions and lab-synthesized nickel sulphides have been found. The collaboration of the two institutes did not only lead to new scientific questions, but also an intensified cooperation beyond the scope of this project.
