Egbert Kankeleit and the beginnings of IANUS

IANUS represents peace and conflict research rooted in the natural and engineering sciences at TU Darmstadt. How did the IANUS concept of value-based research become established, and what experiences and conflicts lay at its foundation?
A major role in this was played by the nuclear physicist Egbert Kankeleit (1929-2022), from Darmstadt, who demonstrated in the 1980s that plutonium produced in civilian nuclear power plants could be used in nuclear weapons.
Franz Fujara—who worked as a solid-state physicist at TU Darmstadt from 1999 onwards and served as spokesperson for IANUS for many years until 2015—paid tribute to Egbert Kankeleit’s work from physical, political, and ethical perspectives. In addition, Alexandra Kankeleit spoke about her parents' struggle against the Greek military dictatorship (1967–1974).
This event is also an opportunity to discuss the methods and ideas of IANUS in terms of their relevance for today's research.
